Living with a vision impairment in a sighted world can be difficult and overwhelming at times. The future can seem daunting, and coping with a vision impairment can be challenging for children, especially while navigating through the regular hurdles of life.
On December 19, 2023, Sterling Global Oil Resources Ltd. (SGORL) organised an event themed ‘A Ray of Hope’ at Agbowa Model School, Ikorodu, Lagos State. The event involved the distribution of guide canes, tape recorders, writing frames, styluses, and carbon papers to blind children aged between 7 and 17.
Dignitaries present at the event included Dr Mrs Abimbola Abolarin, Director, Special Education, Ministry of Education, Lagos State; Mr. Adejuwo Azeez, Director, Special Education Counselling, Ministry of Education, Lagos State; Alhaja Adebanjo A., Senior Principal, Agbowa Model School, Ikorodu, Ministry of Education, Lagos State; and Mrs. Ogun O., Principal, Agbowa Senior Model School, Ikorodu, Ministry of Education, Lagos State.
In her speech, Dr Mrs Abimbola Abolarin, Director of Special Education, Ministry of Education, Lagos State, expressed, “Understanding the spectrum of visual impairment and dispelling common misconceptions and stigmas around sight loss is crucial. While these children face perplexing perceptions, our love and support can pave a safe and nurturing path for them.”
“We appreciate SGORL for providing guide canes, tape recorders, writing frames, and styluses to these blind children. These resources can aid them in moving independently, engaging in learning, and expressing themselves creatively.”
Surviving with a vision impairment can be challenging, involving overcoming numerous obstacles. However, it can also be truly enriching and rewarding, offering a different perspective on life. Sound and touch take on new significance when sight is severely restricted or absent. If given the opportunity, these blind children can participate and learn alongside their sighted peers.
Alhaja Adebanjo A., Senior Principal, Agbowa Model School, Ikorodu, Ministry of Education, Lagos State, emphasised, “Reducing childhood blindness is achievable, as it can often be preventable or treatable. There is hope for childhood blindness.
“SGORL’s initiative encompasses a demonstration of generosity aiming to bridge the gap between the privileged and less fortunate in society through compassionate interventions. Children with disabilities present a learning curve.”
SGORL envisions a world where blind children achieve their full potential and contribute to societal progress. The company is committed to supporting these exceptional children in developing their individual strengths while compensating for their limitations.
