The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit (task force) has warned the state residents against blocking streets for social events.

The Chairman of the unit, CSP Adetayo Akerele, gave the warning on Tuesday in a statement signed by the agency’s spokesperson, Mr Gbadeyan Abdulraheem.

Akerele said that all social events, including religious events, causing inconveniences to other residents and motorists would no longer be tolerated in the state.

He said that apart from obstructing public roads, such private actions inconvenienced law-abiding citizens and posed security and safety risks.

“It is unacceptable for any individual or group to hijack public spaces, especially roads meant for the free movement of people and vehicles, for their own selfish interests,” he said.

Akerele cited a recent incident where a social event on Raymond Njoku Street in Ikoyi was disrupted after the task force in response to complaints of traffic obstruction and noise pollution.

He said that the event was terminated and the key organisers arrested.

“We are also aware of similar events on streets such as Lawani Street in Yaba, Ganiyu Lamina Street at Ijaiye Ojokoro, and other locations across Lagos metropolis.

“We are appealing to those involved in this practice to desist forthwith or face serious legal consequences.

“Blocking roads for parties or religious events is illegal, and those involved will face the full weight of the law,” he warned.

The chairman urged residents to use designated event centres or obtain necessary permits from relevant authorities before organising gatherings that might impact public roads.

He said that the agency, in collaboration with other security agencies, would conduct routine monitoring and enforcement to prevent further illegal blocking of roads and inner streets.
