As the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) prepares to announce the dates for Ekiti and Osun States’ off-cycle governorship elections, political anticipation is high. In Ekiti State, Governor Biodun Oyebanji of the APC is widely expected to secure a second term with minimal opposition, as even PDP leaders have reportedly endorsed him. However, in Osun State, the contest promises to be a fierce battle as the APC seeks to unseat the incumbent, Senator Ademola Adeleke, whose administration has faced significant criticism over its performance and governance style.

In the lead-up to the 2022 elections, Adeleke made numerous promises, including full local government autonomy and an agricultural revolution. However, his administration has largely failed to deliver on these commitments. Critics argue that local government chairmen in the state function more as political appointees than autonomous leaders, while promised industrial and economic growth remains elusive. Despite boasting connections in global business circles, Adeleke has yet to attract a single notable foreign direct investment (FDI) to Osun.

The state’s agricultural sector remains stagnant, cultural and tourism projects are underwhelming, and health and education infrastructure are reportedly worse off than under previous administrations. Adeleke’s critics also highlight perceived financial mismanagement, with over ₦500 billion in state revenue allegedly unaccounted for. Furthermore, accusations of favoritism and regional bias have sparked discontent, with allegations of government concentration in Ede to the detriment of other local government areas.

Although Adeleke has made some progress in resolving salary arrears for civil servants, his administration’s overall performance is viewed as lackluster. According to Samson Owoyokun, a former Senior Special Assistant to Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, “The governor appears to be more of a figurehead, with decisions seemingly driven by friends and family members rather than a coherent governance strategy.

Amid calls for former Governor and current Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, to contest the 2026 election, the APC is strategizing for a robust comeback. Owoyokun emphasizes that the party must maintain a democratic and inclusive approach to candidate selection, allowing all aspirants a fair chance to compete. “If Oyetola decides not to run, his influence and democratic ideals will ensure a level playing field for all aspirants,” he stated.

Debates over zoning the governorship to Osun West have also resurfaced, but Owoyokun dismisses such calls as counterproductive. “Good governance is about merit, not zoning,” he argues, urging the party to prioritize competence over regional considerations.

Among the names being floated as potential APC candidates, Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru (SRJ) stands out for his widespread popularity, political acumen, and administrative experience. Owoyokun believes SRJ possesses the qualities needed to challenge Adeleke successfully, describing him as “youthful, vibrant, and deeply knowledgeable about Osun’s challenges and solutions.”

As the APC gears up for 2026, party members and stakeholders are encouraged to actively participate in the political process, ensuring the emergence of a candidate capable of reclaiming Osun State from the PDP.
