President Bola Tinubu has thrown his weight behind his chief of staff, Fem Gbajabiamila, who some loyalists of the president were reported to have accused of trading political appointments.

The president expressed his absolute confidence in the former speaker of the House of Representatives shortly before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Council Chamber of the presidential villa, Abuja, on Monday.⁣

Reports have said that some of the president’s supporters had accused the chief of staff of “trading off appointments in the government of President Tinubu to the highest bidder.” ⁣ ⁣

Such loyalists were also said to have insisted on Gbajabiamila being removed from the seat of power.

They had cited the recent appointment of 10 Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), claiming, for instance, that the original nominee from Ekiti State was substituted with the name of a former commissioner under the immediate past governor of Ekiti state, Kayode Fayemi.⁣ ⁣

But in his response to the allegations, President Tinubu stated: “First of all, let me reiterate to all of you the fact that a lot of stories are going around about what is happening.

“I have told everyone in this country that I can make mistakes. They are bound to air them out and correct them.

“Perfection is that of God almighty. I have absolute confidence on the integrity of my chief of staff.

“All campaigns of calumny and insinuations should stop. The buck stops here.

“If I make mistakes, I’m ready to own up to it and we are all joining hands to fight corruption and we want to enforce the law along with you.”
