The Senate has urged the organisers of the August 1-10, 2024 protest to be patient with President Bola Tinubu as some of the economic measures put in place in the last year need more time to mature.

The Senate on Wednesday, made a last-minute effort to halt the protests beginning on August 1 over the current hardship being experienced by Nigerians.

The Red Chamber, at an emergency session it convened in Abuja, urged the organisers to shelve protests.

It said the administration of President Bola Tinubu needed more time for some of the economic measures it had put in place in the last one year to mature.

The Senate mentioned the new national minimum wage of N70,000, the student loan implementation, among others, as measures introduced to address some of the challenges the country faced at the morning.

The Senate took the decision at a closed-door session presided by the President of the Senate, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, where the lawmakers reviewed the impending protests.

Akpabio, reading the resolution taken at the session, stated partly, “The Senate, in closed-door, reviewed the impeding protests and urges that one year is not long enough for the policies being implemented by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to yield the desired results.”

On its part as a legislature, the Senate pledged its willingness to “legislate on all matters that will bring succour to Nigerians.”

Seventy-five of the 109 senators attended the emergency session.
