The academic community in Kano State has been thrown into mourning following the gruesome killing of a staff member of Northwest University, Kano, identified as Buhari Imam.

The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, June 11, in the Sheka Sabuwar Abuja area of Kumbotso Local Government Area.

According to reports, Imam was accosted by phone thieves who stabbed him during a violent robbery and fled with only his mobile phone.

The victim sustained deep abdominal wounds and was rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) for treatment. Sadly, despite medical efforts, he died two days later, on Friday, June 13.

Confirming the incident, the Chairman of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Northwest University Kano Branch, Comrade Bashir Muhammad, expressed deep shock over the loss and called for justice.

“The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), Northwest University Kano Branch, expresses its deepest shock and outrage over the brutal murder of our esteemed member, Buhari Imam,” Muhammad said.

He called on the Kano State government and security agencies to swiftly investigate the murder, apprehend the culprits, and ensure they are brought to justice. Muhammad also urged the authorities to provide support to the bereaved family.

“He was the breadwinner, caring for his elderly mother and four siblings. We demand not just justice, but support for the family he left behind,” he added.

Residents have also expressed growing concern over rising insecurity in the Kumbotso area and are calling for increased patrols and community safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
