United States President Donald Trump is reportedly considering the inclusion of Nigeria and 35 other countries in a new wave of travel bans and visa restrictions, a development disclosed on Saturday, June 14, 2025.

According to a report by The Washington Post, the proposal stems from an internal memo signed by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The document mandates that the affected countries must comply with newly established diplomatic and immigration criteria within 60 days or face punitive actions.

Predominantly made up of African nations, the list includes Angola, Ghana, Liberia, Egypt, South Sudan, and others. Also featured are countries from Asia, the Pacific, and the Caribbean such as Syria, Bhutan, Cambodia, Tonga, and Vanuatu.

“The affected countries are expected to meet new requirements laid down by the State Department within 60 days,” the report stated.

The move aligns with Trump’s continued hardline immigration stance since the beginning of his second term in January 2025.

Each listed country is expected to submit a detailed plan of action by Wednesday, aimed at fulfilling the new U.S. conditions.

Nigeria’s appearance on the list is significant, having been excluded from a similar 43-nation draft in March 2025 that categorized countries into red, orange, and yellow groups ranging from complete travel bans to limited visa access.

Its inclusion in the June list marks a noticeable shift in diplomatic relations between Washington and Abuja.

Earlier, Trump signed an executive order enforcing a full travel ban on 12 countries, including Libya, Iran, and Myanmar.

Analysts warn that the expanded restrictions could severely impact Nigeria’s ties with the U.S., particularly in trade, education, and immigration. Critics argue the policy disproportionately targets developing countries and risks undermining global cooperation.
