The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Chess in Slums Africa have introduced chess to Maiduguri Maximum Prison to enhance inmate rehabilitation.

Speaking during the lunch at Maximum Prison in Maiduguri on Tuesday, Tunde Onakoya, Convener of Chess in Slums Africa, said the initiative coincides with Human Rights Day to highlight inmates’ rights in Nigeria.

According to him, “Chess instils responsibility, discipline, and organization in prisoners.”

Over 100 prisoners and officers have undergone training, acquiring valuable life skills through chess workshops.

Bassey John, an inmate, commended the initiative, saying “Chess has given me a second chance.”

Cheikh Toure, UNODC Representative, said chess is not only teaching strategy but patience, and decision-making.

The Annual Chess in Prisons Championship celebrated personal growth and ethical behaviour.

Deputy Controller General of Corrections Olanrewaju Amoran stressed the importance of humane treatment for effective rehabilitation.
