With just a few hours left before the November 5, 2024 United States presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris has outlined a bold commitment to legalise recreational marijuana if elected.
In a post on her official X account on Sunday, the Democrats presidential candidate promised a comprehensive plan to reform outdated drug laws and expand opportunities within the cannabis industry.
This stance marks a shift in the nation’s drug policy, aiming to address what she described as long-standing inequalities within the criminal justice system.
Advocates for cannabis reform have long argued that current laws disproportionately impact minority communities, creating barriers to employment and economic opportunities. Harris’s plan would not only legalise recreational marijuana nationwide but also dismantle these systemic obstacles.
She wrote, “I will legalize recreational marijuana, break down unjust legal barriers, and create opportunities for all Americans to succeed in this new industry.”
The coming election will be the 60th quadrennial presidential election, during which voters will select electors for the Electoral College, who will, in turn, elect the president and vice president for a four-year term.
Kamala Harris, the first woman to serve as U.S. Vice President, aims to make history again by becoming the country’s first female president. Meanwhile, Donald Trump seeks a return to the White House after his 2020 defeat.
