Puerto Rican music sensation, Benito Antonio Martínez, professionally known as Bad Bunny, has publicly expressed his support for U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris by sharing a campaign video with his over 45 million Instagram followers on Sunday.
The video highlights Harris’s plans for Puerto Rico, contrasting her leadership with former President Donald Trump’s controversial response to the island following Hurricane Maria in 2017.
The endorsement came shortly after comedian Tony Hinchcliffe sparked outrage at a Trump rally in Madison Square Garden, New York, with an offensive joke targeting Puerto Rico.
In a video shared multiple times by Bad Bunny, Harris said, “I will never forget what Donald Trump did and what he did not do when Puerto Rico needed a caring and a competent leader.
“He abandoned the island, tried to block aid after back-to-back devastating hurricanes and offered nothing more than paper towels and insults.”
Both Harris and Trump have been actively courting Puerto Rican voters, particularly in Pennsylvania, where nearly 500,000 Puerto Ricans reside. This demographic is crucial, with both campaigns seeking to secure support in the battleground state.
According to CNN, sources familiar with the Harris campaign revealed that officials had been working to secure Bad Bunny’s endorsement, recognising his influence within the Latino community. The campaign hopes his support will resonate with young Latino men, a demographic that has shown increasing support for Trump.
The Harris campaign celebrated Bad Bunny’s endorsement alongside support from other prominent celebrities, such as Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin.
