The National Agency of Great Green Wall has disclosed that they have planted over 10 million trees across the 11 Frontline states to protect desertification from the Sahara.
Speaking during the ongoing celebration to mark the 2023 National Great Green Wall Day in Gusau, Zamfara state capital, today, the Director General of the agency Dr Yusuf Maina Bukar disclosed that the agency has also planned to plant more trees.
The Director General, who was represented by the Head of Administration of the agency Nasiru Samaila, revealed that the 11 Frontline states include Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina, Kano, Borno, Jigawa, Bauchi, Yobe, Adamawa, Kebbi, and Gombe states.

He stressed that the aim of the celebration is to bring all stakeholders together, including Governors, traditional rulers, Ministry of Environment, and schools, to form a habit of planting trees in their environment.
“Everyone knows we are facing a lot of challenges because of climate change due to desertification and land degradation. The importance of planting a tree can never be overemphasized due to its contribution to the country.”
He maintained that the agency, under Dr Maina Bukar’s administration, has introduced a lot of initiatives for the National Great Green Wall for its sustainability since its inception in the country.
“The agency has planted over 10 million trees across the Frontline states since its inception in 2003 to the time it was named an agency by the act of Parliament to protect the degradation of land and desert encroachment.”
He revealed that transformations such as a design that would trap water and some nutrients for the survival of trees for a long period of time were introduced.
“Part of the transformation brought by the Director General was also the introduction of a water box that can retain water and sustain it for a long period of time, between three to four months.”
According to him, training and retraining with a lot of transformation agendas were brought to the agency within the shortest possible time by the Director General of the National Great Green Wall.
During the celebration in the state, trees were planted at Ibrahim Gusau Model Primary School in Gusau, JB Yakubu Secretariat, Government House, and the Emir of Gusau palace in the state.
