Sylvia Olisais an actor, film producer, and entrepreneur. She has established a distinct presence in both the entertainment and beauty industries. In this interview with SEGUN ADEBAYO, she shares insights into her inspirations and the challenges of managing a high-profile career.
What drew you to Nollywood?
I was drawn to Nollywood because I wanted to explore my natural talent for acting and filmmaking and also wanted to be part of the vibrant storytelling and the opportunity to bring diverse African narratives to life. The ability to connect with audiences through compelling characters and stories is what truly excites me about being part of this industry.
It was observed that you are mostly featured in your husband’s movie. Why?
My husband, who is also an actor and producer, and I share a unique creative synergy. Working together allows us to collaborate seamlessly, bringing out the best in each other. It’s also a wonderful way to spend more time together and support each other’s careers. That doesn’t mean I do not work or I am not open to working with other fantastic producers because that’s a misconception producers have about me. Please let me use this opportunity to clear it now, I am open to collaborating and working with other filmmakers.
Are there some kinds of roles you would not want to play?
Yes, there are certain roles I would prefer to avoid. I’m selective about roles and stories that don’t align with my values or that might negatively impact my image. I believe in taking on characters that challenge me but also reflect positively on my brand. I intend to be in this business for life, so I am never pressured to take on every role that comes my way.
Is your husband a jealous person ?
Yes, he is, but very supportive and understanding of my career. We have a strong foundation of trust and mutual respect, which allows us to handle the dynamics of our professional lives with ease.
You still play romantic roles; how do you feel doing that in front of your husband?
It’s part of the job, and we both understand that. When I’m on set, I’m in character, and my husband respects that. We both maintain a professional attitude and understand the boundaries between our personal and professional lives.
How is the present bad economy dealing with you as a beauty specialist?
The current economic situation poses challenges, but it also pushes us to innovate and adapt. We focus on maintaining quality while being mindful of pricing to accommodate our customers. Despite the hurdles, we continue to find ways to thrive and support our clients.
The Nollywood industry is constantly evolving. How do you stay innovative and keep your talent fresh?
Continuous learning and staying curious are key. I take acting workshops, attend film festivals, and stay updated with global trends. Networking with other professionals and experimenting with different genres also helps in keeping my craft dynamic and fresh.
What are your thoughts on the growing global recognition of Nollywood?
It’s exciting to see Nollywood gaining international acclaim. This recognition opens doors for more collaborations and showcases the rich cultural heritage of Nigeria and even Africa to the world. It’s a testament to the hard work and creativity of everyone involved in the industry.
In your opinion, what does the future hold for female filmmakers/actresses in Nollywood?
The future is bright for female filmmakers and actresses in Nollywood. There’s a growing emphasis on gender equality and more opportunities for women to take on leading roles in the industry. I believe we will see more women telling diverse stories and making significant impacts both locally and globally.
What do you think is the cause of celebrities’ marital crisis?
The pressures of fame and the demanding nature of the entertainment industry can strain relationships. Lack of privacy, constant scrutiny, and busy schedules can contribute to marital issues. Proper Communication and understanding are crucial to navigating these challenges.
How best can celebrities secure their marriage?
Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is essential. Prioritizing time for each other, clear communication, and keeping personal life private can help. It’s also important to have mutual respect and understanding of each other’s careers and personal needs. I have come to accept that conflict is unavoidable in marriage, but achieving peace is a must. Try to surround yourself with people who love your husband as much as they love you.
What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced combining Nollywood and entrepreneurship?
Balancing both worlds can be challenging, especially managing time effectively. There are days when I have back-to-back shoots and business meetings, but I’ve learned to prioritize and delegate tasks. It requires a lot of discipline and a great support system. Most importantly being on screen has helped boost my skincare business. When people watch my movies and see how healthy my skin is, they reach out to me or my team via social media to patronise celeb glow skincare products. I love that.
How do you manage life as a working mum; beauty business, and movie locations?
It’s all about organization and having a solid support system. I plan my schedule meticulously, making sure to allocate quality time for my family, business, and acting. My team plays a crucial role in ensuring everything runs smoothly when I’m away. It’s not easy at all, I must confess, but I try my best to balance things out.
