The family of an 11-year-old girl (name withheld), who was brutally raped by her 45-year-old neighbour, is facing daily threats from the perpetrator’s family and struggling to secure a safe relocation.
The incident, TRIBUNE ONLINE gathered, occurred earlier this month at a community in Akwa Ibom.
The minor was allegedly defiled by neighbour after returning from school.
Her family reported the crime, leading to the neighbour’s arrest.
However, they have since been subjected to intimidation and pressure to drop the case.
“We receive threatening calls and messages daily, warning us to withdraw the case or face consequences,” said the victim’s grandmother, her primary caregiver.
The police have advised the family to seek alternative accommodation due to the escalating threats. However, financial constraints hinder their ability to relocate.
“We urge well-meaning individuals and organizations to support us in raising ₦1,000,000 to secure a safe haven for Jane and her family,” said Bitto Keren Esq., a private legal practitioner assisting the family.
“We will continue to advocate for Jane’s rights and ensure her perpetrator is brought to justice,” she added.
The funds will cover:
– Two years’ house rent (₦600,000)
– Relocation costs (₦150,000)
– Grandmother’s debt offset and new business setup (₦250,000)
