Two individuals, a male and a female, lost their lives on Thursday in a fatal multiple accidents that occurred on the well-known Eko Bridge heading towards the Alaka Area in Lagos.
Additionally, five other individuals sustained serious injuries in the tragic accident.
The collision involved six private vehicles, one of which was a fully loaded ‘MAC’ truck with the registration number (T-1501 LA).
According to the operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) who were present at the scene to conduct emergency operations, preliminary investigations indicated that the loaded ‘MAC’ truck, while travelling at a high speed, collided with five other private vehicles, including a commercial mini bus (commonly referred to as a “Korope”). The collision was a result of brake failure on the part of the truck.
A LASTMA official named Akinde Olusola ‘Zebra’, who leads Zone 3 Iponri, headed the rescue team and confirmed that the accident tragically resulted in two fatalities, as well as five individuals being severely injured.
Olusola further disclosed that the five rescued accident victims and the two deceased individuals (a male and a female) were immediately transported to a nearby General Hospital using an ambulance from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Response Unit (LRU).
Mr Bolaji Oreagba, the General Manager of LASTMA, stressed the importance for motorists, especially truck drivers, to ensure their vehicles are in good working condition before embarking on journeys across the State.
While emphasizing that LASTMA will continue to educate motorists, particularly commercial bus drivers, about the dangers of overspeeding, he also expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased.
Other emergency responders who were present at the accident scene included the LASEMA Response Unit (LRU), the Federal Road Safety Corps, and police officers from the Iponri Divisional Police Station.
