Hundreds of members and supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Umunneochi local government area of Abia State have decamped to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party PDP in the state.
The decampees were received into the PDP fold by the Deputy Governorship candidate of the party for the 2023 general elections in Abia State, Okey Igwe.
Speaking on the rationale behind the mass defection to the PDP during their formal declaration which took place in Umunneochi LGA of the state, during the week, the APC defectors hinted that they were convinced that the governorship arrangements by the Peoples Democratic Party favoured the people of old Isuikwuato district and decided to join in achieving it.
The ex-APC members assured that they would work to actualize the victory of the Peoples Democratic Party at all levels in Abia State in the coming main elections in 2023.
They particularly congratulated Okey Igwe who is also the member representing Umunneochi state constituency in Abia House of Assembly, on his nomination as the running mate of the PDP gubernatorial standard-bearer, Professor Uche Ikonne.
They said, “We’re assuring the leadership of the PDP in Abia of our maximum support, as well as our genuine commitment in garnering bulk votes from every nook and cranny of Umunneochi local government area to ensure all PDP candidates emerge successful and victorious at the end of the coming electoral process in Abia”.
In his speech, while receiving the APC decampees, the PDP Deputy Governorship candidate in the state, Okey Igwe said the massive defection from various opposition parties is a pointer to the full Support of the Ikonne/Igwe ticket which is gaining in the grassroots on daily basis.
He added that getting more members for the party boosts the chances of the PDP emerging victorious in the general elections next year.
He assured the APC defectors that they would not be discriminated against and also admonished them to work effectively in ensuring total victory for the Peoples Democratic Party in Abia State.
