President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, has charged all affiliate union of the congress to prioritise education of members on the promotion and protection of workers’ rights.
He also emphasised the critical role of education in shaping the future of work and workers’ rights.
Ajaero gave the charge at the opening ceremony of NLC’s 2024 Rain School conference, held at Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, which had union leaders and members from across the nation discuss on the theme, ‘Workers’ Education and Future of Work.’
Ajaero expressed enthusiasm for the educational activities that empower union leaders.
He underscored the importance of enhancing skills to navigate an increasingly complex socioeconomic landscape, stressing the union’s duty to deliver equitable benefits amidst evolving challenges.
He said: “This year’s theme, ‘Workers’ Education and Future of Work,’ arrives at a crucial juncture as we confront rapid transformations in labour markets.”
He highlighted the role of adapting to technological advancements, economic shifts and global influences like the COVID-19 pandemic, which continue to redefine work structures.
Addressing the delegates, he posed questions about the future of work: “What will be the impact of technology on work? How will automation and digitalisation reshape employment conditions? Will future workplaces promote fairness and justice?” “
These inquiries, he argued, demand urgent deliberation to safeguard workers’ rights and shape favourable outcomes for society.
The NLC president stressed the proactive stance of trade unions in understanding and influencing the future work environment.
He called for collective effort to ensure that advancements in technology and policy enhance working conditions rather than exacerbate inequalities.
“Education remains a cornerstone of our mission at the NLC. It equips us with the knowledge to advocate effectively for workers’ rights and adapt to new challenges,” he noted.
He highlighted the Rain School as pivotal in fostering a united movement capable of addressing future socioeconomic shifts.
Throughout the programme, delegates will engage in discussions and workshops focusing on digital literacy, the gig economy and remote work.
The sessions aim to deepen understanding and equip participants with strategies to advocate for equitable and inclusive workplaces.
Comrade Ajaero further urged active participation from all attendees, emphasising the power of unity in achieving the union’s goals.
“The world of work can only be fair when it upholds the principles of Decent Work,” he asserted.
He called for solidarity in advocating for fair wages and protecting workers’ rights against proposed exploitative measures.
As the Rain School 2024 unfolds, it stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment for workers across Nigeria. With education as the guiding light, union members are poised to influence and shape a future of work that honours dignity, fairness and justice for all.
