Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru (SRJ) is undeniably a force to reckon with in Osun State’s political landscape. His unmatched popularity and acceptability, coupled with his political acumen, administrative exposure, and federal connections, make him an outstanding candidate for the 2026 gubernatorial race. These attributes, along with his eloquence, brilliance, vibrancy, and deep understanding of Osun’s challenges and solutions, form his unique selling point (USP).
In my earlier series, I emphasized the importance of leveraging Osogbo’s historical, cultural, and political strengths. This resonates with the saying, “Charity begins at home.” For Osogbo, the time has come to champion an agenda that aligns with its identity and aspirations.
Celebrating Osogbo’s Rich Heritage
Osogbo, the sacred land of kola-nut owners and dyers, is a city of resilience and vibrancy. From the revered Ataoja of Osogboland, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji Olanipekun Larooye II, to its citizens at home and abroad, Osogbo remains a beacon of history and culture.
The panegyrics of Osogbo, beautifully translated, echo its pride and significance:
“Osogbo, the sacred land of kola-nut owners,
Home to its people and welcoming to strangers alike,
Osun Osogbo, may you bring blessings and fortune,
Edumare, preserve and bless Osogboland. Ase!”
The Osogbo Agenda: A Call for Unity
Osogbo has historically supported leaders from other regions. Now, it is time to rally behind one of its own. With over 500 polling units within Osogboland and a total of 3,763 across the state, Osogbo has the numerical strength to make history.
From Oke Baale to Isale Osun, Ayetoro to Oroki Estate, Osogbo must unite and collaborate with neighboring communities to achieve this goal. The city’s strength lies in its unity, and 2026 presents an opportunity to lift the embargo on its governorship aspirations.
Learning from History
Osogbo’s numerical strength mirrors the support Ogbomosoland gave the late Otunba Christopher Alao-Akala in Oyo State and the backing Owo provided the late Rotimi Akeredolu in Ondo State. These communities demonstrated the power of unity and determination. Osogbo must follow suit to ensure its place in history.
Why SRJ?
SRJ’s journey from humble beginnings to national prominence is inspiring. Born to parents of modest means, he worked tirelessly to attain academic and professional excellence. As a lawyer, commissioner, senator, and now the APC’s National Secretary, he has demonstrated competence, dedication, and vision.
Critics within the ruling PDP acknowledge his brilliance and the threat he poses. His leadership is the antidote to the retrogression Osun faces under the current administration. As the saying goes, “Water quenches fire.” SRJ is the solution to PDP’s misrule.
A Movement for the Future
Osogbo must rally behind SRJ, recognizing his potential to lead Osun State to greater heights. His track record, intelligence, and commitment make him the best candidate for the APC in 2026.
As we prepare for the journey ahead, let us unite under the banner of #OsogboItIsOurTurn and #OsogboAwaLokan. Join the SRJ movement and be part of this historic moment.
