A 46-year-old man, Samson Kadiri, who works as a scavenger, has been arraigned before the Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan for allegedly stealing electric wire cables that belong to the Oyo State Government.
The defendant has been charged with two counts of theft and wilful damage, although he has pleaded not guilty.
According to the prosecution counsel, Insp Olalekan Adegbite, Kadiri is alleged to have committed the offence on February 13, around 7 am, when he willfully damaged Oyo State Government property.
The defendant is accused of cutting and stealing cable wires worth N100,000 that were being used to provide electricity to the Awotan refuse dump site located in Apete, Ibadan.
The offence contravenes Section 383 and is punishable under Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State 2000.
During the court proceedings, Chief Magistrate Mrs P.O. Adetuyibi granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum. The case has been adjourned until May 17 for further hearing.
In the event of being found guilty, Kadiri could face imprisonment ranging from three to seven years, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria.
