Over 80 artists from 30 countries will participate in the fourth edition of the Lagos Biennial themed ‘Refuge’.
The event will happen from February 3 to 10 at the Tafawa Balewa Square, with curated sections including Gregarious Architectures, CAPTCHA, and Worldmade Communities. A series of autonomous collaborative platforms, known as the REFUGE teams, is also included in the lineup.
A statement from the organisers explained that the Tafawa Balewa Square was chosen as the venue of the fourth outing because of its place in Nigerian history.
“The Biennial takes place at the historical space of the Tafawa Balewa Square to reflect on possible meanings of political allegiance, territory, sovereignty, regionality, notions of belonging, encounter, and alliance. The Tafawa Balewa Square was predominantly a site of leisure in the colonial period as a racecourse and then, after Independence, increasingly hosted political, cultural, and commercial events,” the statement noted.
The organisers further disclosed that this edition marks a shift towards experimental and generative models, emphasising prototypes that activate possibilities in the world.
A press preview kicks off the Biennial on February 3 at noon before the official opening ceremony at 3 p.m. with artistic directors Kathryn and Folakunle Oshun and Lagos Biennial board member N’Goné Fall welcoming guests.
This year’s Biennial will also feature performances, talks, and discussions centred around the theme. Some of the impressive lineup of artists at the event include Pa Bruce Onobrakpeya, Demas Nwoko, Victor Ehikhamenor, Odun Orimolade, Temitayo Ogunbiyi, Maria Thereza Alves, Jimmie Durham and Ibrahim Mahama, among others.
