Africa has witnessed some of the world’s longest-serving leaders, with many presidents exceeding the traditional two-term limit for most countries. This phenomenon is often tied to constitutional amendments, political dominance, or lack of strong opposition.

Based on information from sources such as Leadership Nigeria, here are some African nations where presidents rule beyond 8 years.

1. Equatorial Guinea

  • Leader: Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo
  • Tenure: Since 1979 (44+ years)

Obiang is the longest-serving president globally, having taken power through a coup. His rule is characterized by strict control over the country’s oil wealth and minimal political opposition.

2. Cameroon

  • Leader: Paul Biya
  • Tenure: Since 1982 (41+ years)

Paul Biya is the world’s second longest-serving president. Despite electoral fraud and political suppression allegations, he remains in power with significant backing from international allies.

3. Uganda

  • Leader: Yoweri Museveni
  • Tenure: Since 1986 (38+ years)

Museveni initially promised reform but has since amended Uganda’s constitution to remove term limits and age caps, ensuring his continued leadership.

  • Tenure: Since 2000 (23+ years)

Kagame is widely praised for Rwanda’s economic transformation but has faced criticism for extending his rule through constitutional changes.
