In a world where most countries have dedicated military and police forces, a few rare places maintain peace without security officers. These countries rely on unique arrangements, like alliances with other nations or focusing on strict neutrality, to keep their citizens safe.

This article includes countries that don’t have security officers according to the World Peace Index and historical studies.

1. Iceland

Iceland stands out as one of the few nations without an army. Instead, Iceland relies on its NATO membership and alliance with the United States to protect if necessary. Iceland is often ranked as one of the world’s safest and most peaceful countries.

2. Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein is a tiny, peaceful country between Switzerland and Austria. It abolished its army in 1868 due to the cost of maintaining it. As the two countries have a close relationship, Liechtenstein relies on Switzerland for assistance if any conflict arises.

3. Vatican City

The Vatican, the world’s smallest independent country, doesn’t have a traditional army or police force. Instead, it’s protected by the Swiss Guard, an elite unit provided by Switzerland, whose members take oaths to protect the Pope.
