Speaking is an essential part of our lives that we cannot do without. We must talk to someone at work, on our way out, at an event, in a class, or to a close friend.

However, amid this, if you are consistently labeled as someone who loses their thread of thought while speaking, don’t worry; it’s familiar.

Let’s examine strategies that’ll help you correct this.

1. Pause and take a breath

When you notice your thoughts drifting away, you can pause, close your eyes for a moment, and take a breath. This method may sound too obvious, but it’s effective.

When you do this, you’ll be able to sail through your thoughts without the panic that usually leaves you incapacitated. So, even when you panic and seem slightly confused, it won’t be evident to those you speak with.

Also, pausing and trying to think about your words before you say them will help you speak more effectively.

2. Pace yourself

It’s common for most people, especially in Nigeria, to speak with energy and in a rush. You can lower your pitch if you want to communicate effectively while speaking. This will help you speak confidently and allow your speech to connect correctly.

3. Practice

You know what they say, yeah? Practice makes you better. You could practice with a friend or in front of the mirror and repeat over and over again, and over time,  you start to see significant improvement in your thoughts and speech.

4. Be relaxed and stay confident

When you have faith in yourself, staying relaxed and confident is easier. What if you lose your thread of thought while speaking? Don’t lose your composure, and continue.

5. Stay hydrated

As minute as this might seem, a lack of water in your system can make you feel tired and inactive, which can, by extension, negatively affect your thread of thoughts while speaking to people.

Water can give you a clear mind and help you feel rejuvenated. So, you must prioritise staying hydrated by having water or fruits/food with a water content within reach.

You can take water strategically throughout the day—in the morning before breakfast, during conversations, at work, or during a presentation.

6. One word at a time

While speaking, ensure that you choose your words at a coordinated pace. Take things a step at a time, a word at a time. Don’t try to say too many things all at the same time.

Learn how to concentrate on one word at a time. It’ll help you keep confusion in check.

Above all, remember to pace yourself and take things a step at a time. With repetition, you’ll get better over time.
