Jewellery is an essential part of daily outfits, adding style and personality to any look. From rings and necklaces to earrings and bracelets, these accessories can elevate an outfit when worn correctly. However, there are common mistakes that we make with the use of our jewellery that can ruin this piece of beauty.

In this article are 8 common jewellery mistakes to avoid.

1. Same jewellery every day

I know there are certain pieces of jewellery that you are particularly attached to and you wear them regularly.

However, this should not continue because it will make your everyday jewellery get grimy in places you can’t see and it is certainly boring to stick to a piece of jewellery daily.

2. No taking off jewellery off

Certain individuals never take off their jewellery either for comfort or ease.

If you are in the habit of not taking your jewellery off, then you are unintentionally exposing the jewellery to harsh chemicals that may cause corrosion, tarnishing, and discolouration over time.

So, if you’ve noticed your jewellery getting discoloured, then you could be the guilty one and not the manufacturer.

3. Putting jewellery on first

A common cause of damaged and broken jewellery is snagging on clothing and exposure to beauty products.

Wearing your skincare products, makeup, and perfume, or getting dressed after putting on your jewellery can lead to accidental breakages, tarnishing, and permanent discolouration of the jewellery.

Your jewellery should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off.

4. Not cleaning your jewellery

Another common mistake we make in regard to our jewellery is not cleaning regularly or not cleaning at all.

As long as you wear your jewellery against your skin and clothing for extended periods, it ought to be cleaned and it should be cleaned correctly.

5. Not clasping jewellery after taking them off

Not clasping your jewellery after use is a habit you should let go of. Ensure you always clasp your jewellery when you take them off as this will help to avoid tangled chains, necklaces, and bracelets.

6. Wearing your jewellery to swim or bathe

Wearing your jewellery while swimming or bathing is not the best as you can easily lose them.

The constant exposure of your jewellery to water and other chemicals can permanently damage and discolour it.

So, if you intend to take your bath or go for a swim, ensure you take out your jewellery.

7. Inappropriate storage

As much as possible, avoid storing your jewellery in a place where humidity is an issue and away from free-flowing air.

It is recommended that you store your jewellery in a dedicated jewellery box, polyethylene, mylar ziplock bag, jewellery roll or even keep each piece (or pair) in its own small padded box.

Doing this will limit the exposure to flowing air, humidity, help to prevent scratching and tangling and also keep it shiny for a longer period.

8. Not wearing your jewellery enough

I understand you might only want to wear your jewellery for special occasions, however not wearing your jewellery enough can do just as much damage as over-wearing it.

For certain makes of jewellery, wearing it regularly will help prevent the natural tarnishing process. It is also important to know that when you wear your jewellery, the rubbing motion against your skin and clothing gently polishes the metal helping to maintain its lustrous shine.

By avoiding common mistakes with regard to your jewellery, you can keep your pieces looking great for years.
