The Taraba State Independent Peace Committee, a sub-body of the National Peace Committee (NPC), has expressed deep concern over recent killings in Ussa and Bali local government areas of Taraba State.

The committee, led by its chairman, Professor Talla Ngarka, also criticized Governor Darius Ishaku for allegedly contributing to the breakdown of peace that resulted in the death of one person in Bali LGA.

The victim was reportedly killed during a clash over land ownership between local residents and those attempting to forcefully take over the land.

In a press briefing in Jalingo, the committee condemned the incidents and called on security agencies to restore peace in the affected communities.

Professor Ngarka stated, “We have been working tirelessly to restore peace in troubled communities and to galvanize citizens’ support towards achieving sustainable peace and development in Taraba State.

It is sad that while we were making efforts to galvanize citizen support for a peaceful Taraba, crisis erupted again in Ussa local government area, killing scores of people and rendering many homeless while property worth millions of Naira were destroyed.”

The committee also appealed to candidates and political parties participating in the rerun election scheduled for Saturday in the Takum, Donga and Ussa Federal Constituency to maintain peaceful conduct and respect the people’s right to freely choose their representatives.

Furthermore, the peace committee called on Governor Ishaku to intervene in the alleged forceful eviction of residents of the Dugwer community and ensure due process is followed in an attempt to acquire land in the community.

The committee emphasized that the government must take responsibility for ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state.
