Man remanded for allegedly stabbing 23-year-old to death over N14,000 debt

A High Court Sitting in Ikeja, Lagos State has remanded one Bitrus Wurawa, for allegedly stabbing a 23-year-old man, Ezekiel Yohana, to death with a jackknife at Kara Market, in the Ibeju-Lekki area of the state.

Wurawa was arraigned on 10 April, before Magistrate P. E Nwaka on one count bothering on murder.

The deceased had reportedly borrowed N14,000 from the defendant in January and promised to refund in few weeks but he failed to do so despite several pleas from the defendant.

They were said to have met at Kara Market on a fateful day and Yohana asked for his money.

It was gathered that in the course of an argument, the deceased brought out a jackknife which the defendant immediately snatched from him and used to stab his back and hand.

Eyewitnesses however, rushed the deceased to Epe General Hospital where he was confirmed dead on arrival.

One Omotayo, also an eyewitness, was said to have reported the case to the Akodo Police Division from where it was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba.

The prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, stated that the defendant committed the crime on the 8th of March.

He further stated that the offence contravened Section 222 and is punishable under Section 233 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015.

The charge read, “That you, Bitrus Wurawa, on March 18, 2023, around 6.23 pm at Kara Market, Ibeju Lekki, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District did unlawfully killed one Ezekiel Yohana, 23, by stabbing him with a jackknife.”

Nurudeen urged the court to remand the defendant to the correctional centre pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution.

Magistrate Nwaka, therefore remanded the defendant to the Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the DPP.

The case was adjourned till 5 May, 2023
