Thirteen individuals suspected of posing as fake tax collectors have been arrested by the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) task force on revenue monitoring.

The task force chairman, Yunusa Yusuf, disclosed this during a press briefing held at the council secretariat on Wednesday. The suspects were apprehended at various locations during operations carried out by the task force.

According to Yusuf, the majority of those arrested were young men who were using fake receipts bearing the name of AMAC to collect revenue.

He warned residents of the council to refrain from paying revenue to individuals claiming to be council representatives, adding that anyone who paid cash or money into any account other than that of AMAC would be required to pay double to the appropriate account when the task force came for monitoring.

Yusuf also stressed that business operators in AMAC should not pay consultants on behalf of the council, as consultants working for AMAC always receive a percentage of their payment as agreed upon with the council.

He stated, “We need the revenue to provide dividends of democracy to AMAC residents. AMAC residents deserve potable water, good roads, better healthcare and other basic amenities. Therefore, the illegal revenue collectors are depriving them of the basic amenities and we will not allow that to continue.”

Yusuf further noted that while okada riders and motorists who buy tickets of N100 or N200 and pay in cash are exempted from the restriction, the task force will still monitor and arrest those who print receipts bearing AMAC with the intent to defraud the public. The suspects will face prosecution in a mobile court with four judges.

“We will not rest until we sanitize the system and prosecute those involved, no matter who they may be,” Yusuf declared.
