Nana Oko Gyan writes….

The race for a post-Akufo-Addo NPP leadership, leading to the Party’s 2024 presidential candidacy has begun in earnest, hence several potential aspirants have porrected themselves for consideration of NPP delegates for endorsement as 2024 leader and presidential candidate. This too early beginning of the race, involving the sitting vice-President and indeed some appointee cabinet Minister of state can be as in reference to athletics terms a false start, requiring the competitors to restart afresh, yet the signalling pistol starter apparently has lost the required mandated verve to stop the event, and order for a restart in accordance with the rules of the event.

It is clearly manifested that neither of the serving officials in this second term administration has the patriotic and nationalistic innate heartfelt willingness, preparedness, determination, and concentration to assist in bettering what has gone wrong in their first term of the Akufo-Addo administration. This is what has evinced such a serious and unprecedented voter apathy in the just ended controversial 2020 general and presidential elections.
An NPP overwhelming parliamentary majority in 2016 has plummeted to what is now a hung parliament, and the speaker of parliament is from the opposition NDC.

There appears to be something very unusual about such a false start for this leadership race in the annals of the history of the UP/NPP tradition, and indeed, it is causing eyebrows raised.

What is more in convincing the hitherto Nana “Addomania” enthusiasts that made him enamoured to Ghanaians, but has so soon withered away include the misdeeds in the first term of a Mr “righteous” Akufo-Addo administration. There is currently a public announcement intending for a reconcilliatory team to tour Ghana and apologise for wrongs done in order to win back the trust and confidence of Ghanaians and in fact NPP members, supporters, and sympathisers that had earlier been reposed in President Akufo-Addo. Their core purpose is to forge Party unity and move forward while the brakes are still not released.

This clearly suggests that the ruling Party structures have admitted some untold wrongdoings that require rectifying.

Hence a “worried” NPP chairman, Mr. Freddie Blay has signalled a rather weak and spineless threat of disqualifying all such false starting competitors, yet the chairman’s threat has no legal basis, unless he probably as as usual, unilaterally intends to apply their “buga-buga” dictatorship tactics that they used in disqualifying some parliamentary candidates from contesting, notable amongst them was Madam Hilda Addo of Kwadaso constituency, a suburb of Kumasi.

Notwithstanding the minatory statement by NPP chairman Freddie Blay, seeking to disqualify false starters of the race when a formal ban has not been lifted, adamant supporters and followers of factional camp leaders have more than stubbornly stood up firmly against the illegal threat by adopting a policy of constructive positive disobedience.

The happenstance of this unusual early start event suggests that there’s something seriously wrong with happenings not only in the Party, but also in the entire administration, hence an early start attempt of promise to NPP supporters and Ghanaians not to lose hope and trust, for, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel that will be capable of salvaging the wreckage done to the Party and the country in the past four years.

The race as we see and hear about it is neither for the swift, the rich, the handsome, the beautiful, the popular, nor the gaited tall and strong, nor is it for the glib-tongue seeking sympathy votes, but for the track record holder of good unfailing promise, determined, and able and capable to salvage and deliver, not only to the Party, but to all Ghanaians.
NPP delegates must bear in mind that the Ghanaian public are no longer as they were taken for granted. Today, they’re more discerning and perspicacious in politics. If delegates make a wretched choice of Party leader, either based on who pays more money, or if the endorse a candidate out of sentiments, or sympathy, the 7th of December 2024 is waiting, and will be the best determinant.

If the dropout of the Koforidua manipulation and bogus and elected lame duck national chairman; if the imposition of rejected parliamentary candidates by constituents who were foisted on constituents that ended up in the loss of several parliamentary seats in December 2020 have both not been able to teach NPP delegates a good lesson, then, it’s uncertain what on earth can knock sense and sensibility into the heads of our delegates.
