Nigerian parents have been urged to stop using force on their wards whenever they are choosing a career path, especially when it is against the latter’s passion or area of interest.

This was the submission of Mrs Damola-Okesiji, the principal of State Senior College during the school’s Career Day held Thursday at the Alimosho area of Lagos.

At the event, TRIBUNE ONLINE gathered, the students were enlightened on career opportunities amongst others.

“We have cases where students follow their friends to Science class without having the basic prerequisites for the department they are in.

“We’re re-orientating their parents as well, especially against the use of force on their ward to study course against their area of interest. For instance, I have a lawyer neighbour who wants my child to be a lawyer…

“Parents must look out for the potentials in their ward and allow them to choose (their career) by themselves,” she advised.

One of the beneficiaries, Ugboh Victoria, an SS1 Commercial student, described the event as memorable and a motivation to achieve what she wants to become in the future.

Ifere Judith, on her part, appreciated the school management for affording them the opportunity to learn about career opportunities in Science, Art, and Commercial adding that parents should always allow children follow their dreamiest course.

In her remarks, the convener, Mrs Bademosi Olayinka, said the event was the maiden edition while urging students to take advantage of the teachings in order to earn a living in the world of works.

“The purpose of this programme is to bring our students into the limelight of the world of works, with necessary information on different field of professions which will be of help to them in the nearest future career aspiration.

“I, therefore, admonish you all (referring to the students) to follow all that has been said today and choose a career that will make you fulfilled and great in life,” she said.
