The Bauchi State House of Assembly has adopted a motion directing the State Government to establish referral centres and provide ambulances and free essential drugs in all General Hospitals in the state.

The adoption of the motion came after it was moved by Hon. Lawan Dauda, the Member representing Sade Constituency, who highlighted the urgent need for the Executive Arm to support the families of the deceased and the victims of a fatal motor accident in Lanzai Town, Darazo Local Government Area.

During the debate, Hon. Lawan Dauda explained that the tragic accident occurred last week, resulting in the loss of lives and properties of businessmen from Lanzai who were travelling to Onitsha and Lagos for work.

Eight young men lost their lives instantly, while several others sustained severe injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment. Additionally, numerous goats, fowls, pigeons, and ducks were also lost.

He emphasized that the incident had caused immense grief and hardship for the affected families and the entire community, as most of the deceased and victims were the breadwinners of their respective families.

Hon. Lawan Dauda urged the House to request the State Government to provide relief materials to the families of the deceased, support the injured individuals receiving treatment, and offer capital assistance to those who lost their properties in the accident.

During the debate, Hon. Jamilu Umaru Dahiru, the Deputy Speaker representing Bauchi Central Constituency, commended the mover of the motion for demonstrating compassion towards humanity.

Hon. Saleh Hodi Jibir, the Majority Leader representing Disina Constituency, reminded the House that the 9th Assembly had previously adopted a motion for the creation of accident referral centres, provision of ambulances, and free drugs in every local government of the state.

He suggested that the House should remind the Executive Arm of Government about the need to establish referral centres in General Hospitals across all local governments and equip them with ambulances and essential drugs.

Hon. Dr Nasiru Ahmed Ala, who represents Chinade/Madara Constituency, emphasized the significance of the tragedy occurring in their colleague’s constituency. He proposed that the House send condolences to the Lanzai Community and observe a special prayer and one minute of silence in honour of the deceased and the recovery of the victims.

The Speaker concurred with Hon. Ala’s suggestion and extended the condolences of the House to the people of Lanzai Community. The Speaker also directed the House to observe one minute of special prayer for the deceased and the victims.

Hon. Sa’idu Suleiman Darazo, representing Darazo Constituency, emphasized the urgency of taking action on the matter, as it concerns the lives of constituents and could happen to anyone.

He stressed that the deceased not only lost their lives but also their means of livelihood. He urged the House to assist the affected families, who are currently abandoned and in need of support.

Hon. Ibrahim Tanko Burra, representing Burra Constituency, expressed support for government intervention to address the plight of the deceased families and the victims.

He also pointed out that some Local Governments have two General Hospitals, suggesting that the creation of accident referral centres should include each General Hospital in the State.

Hon. Burra highlighted the lack of appropriate transportation in General Hospital Burra, stating, “In Ningi Local Government Area, we have two General Hospitals: one in Ningi and one in Burra. I can tell you that in General Hospital Burra, there is no single moving vehicle that can transport patients on referral.”
