A Chieftain of the New Nigerian People Party (NNPP), Honourable Damilare Abioro, has asked the Ogun State government to fast-track the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta highway.
This is coming after the Federal Government had approved the request of the state government to handle the reconstruction of the road project, following the public outcry over the deplorable condition of the road by notable Nigerians including the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
Abioro, while addressing newsmen over the weekend on the sideline of the final burial ceremony of Chief Mrs Comfort Iyabode Aduke at Itori, near Ewekoro area of the state, describes the road as a death trap.
The politician explained that the road had been abandoned for too long despite its importance to the economic activities and as well as one of the major and busy roads in the country.
He added that the reconstruction exercise should not be delayed further by the State Government having promised immediate take off after several weeks of approval by the Federal Government.
According to him, Governor Dapo Abiodun should mobilize the contractors to the site to commence work in earnest in order to reduce the untold hardships being faced by the motorists plying the road.
“I want to implore Governor Abiodun to quickly deploy the contractors to this road, having assured the presidency that his administration is ready to move into action immediately after the approval was granted.
“After all, we all have President Bola Tinubu and his minister of Works, Dave Umahi, to thank for heeding our calls for the release of the road for reconstruction.
“Our people here are really suffering, both the commuters, residents, workers, name them. Imagine I was stuck in the traffic for more than five hours between Sango and Ifo, this is really bad, the Governor needs to act fast.”
Abioro further called for palliative measures on some bad portions of the road to at least make it manageable for the travelers plying the segment of the road on a daily basis.
