In what can be described as deference to President Bola Tinubu’s midwife peace pact on the Rivers State political crisis, the Martin Amaewhule-led faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly announced on Wednesday morning the withdrawal of the impeachment notice served on the state governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara.

It is widely believed that the serving of the impeachment notice on the governor was the major reason for the political crisis that is now threatening to consume the entire state.

Withdrawal of the impeachment on Gov. Fubara is the second item on the 8-point peace accord, which parties, including the governor and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, among others, were made to sign on Tuesday.

So the Amaewhule’s faction of the assembly, at its 89th Legislative Sitting on Wednesday in the Auditorium of the House of Assembly Quarters on Aba Road, withdrew the impeachment notice.

The motion was withdrawn via motion at its presentation in plenary.

Speaker Martin Amaewhule, while reading a letter on the floor of the House, signed by 24 other members, recalled that on the 30th of October, 2023, he read a notice of impeachment signed by 24 Members of the House pursuant to Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution as amended, which contained particulars of gross misconduct and was served on the Governor.

He said that following the agreement reached on December 18, 2023, at the instance of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, “the House has withdrawn the notice of impeachment and would abide by the letters of the agreement and the advice of Mr President,” whom he said members have immense respect for.

The Speaker added that the House would continue to perform its constitutional functions of lawmaking and oversight for the development of the state and lauded Mr. President for his fatherly role in the settlement of the issues.

In another development, the House considered further reports from the Adhoc Committee on the Aleto Oil Spill.

Recall that in August 2023, the Committee submitted its report on an oil spill in the Aleto community caused by equipment failure.

Remarking on the report, the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, commended the committee for following up on the resolutions of the House on the initial report and urged the committee to continue and ensure that proper and full remediation is effected.
