Several youths of Asta community, a suburb of Makurdi, the capital city of Benue State, stormed the major highway that leads to Joseph Sawuan University of Agriculture, Makurdi, in the early hours of Monday to protest an attack by suspected herdsmen.
One of the residents of the area, who identified himself as Dave and spoke to newsmen, said that some youths in the early hours of Monday filed out in their numbers to make a fire and blocked the popular Uniagric road.
Dave said that some suspected herdsmen stormed the Asta community and environs on Monday, where they attacked people without provocation.
Several people were reported to have been injured during the attack
According to him, “early hours of today, at about 1 a.m., some people suspected to be herders came to this community (Asta) and attacked people with machetes, knives, and dangerous weapons.
“About six people were taken to the hospital, and some security operatives came to repel the attackers.
“Because of what happened, some youths came out this morning to block the road and vowed not to leave the road until the governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, comes to address them.
Confirming the attack, the Special Adviser to the State Governor on Internal Security, Joseph Har, declined further comments.
Also, the Police Public Relations Officer for the state command, Caterine Anene, confirmed the attack on the community and stated that the injured victims are receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.
Anene said, “Unigric road incident confirmed. Some people were injured and are currently receiving treatment.
