The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued a warning to Nigerians against paying for electricity distribution infrastructure, including transformers, cables, and poles.
This responsibility, NERC emphasised, lies solely with the distribution companies (DisCos).
In a statement shared on Tuesday, accompanied by a video on the social media platform X, NERC made it clear that consumers should not be coerced into purchasing such equipment.
The statement reads: “Is your distribution company expecting you to buy transformers, cables, or poles? Don’t! It is the DisCo’s obligation, not yours!” NERC stated emphatically.
NERC urged consumers to report any instances of coercion or delays by the distribution companies in providing necessary materials.
“Report any coercion to purchase, or delays in providing these materials to NERC for prompt action,” the statement added.
To ensure prompt action on such complaints, NERC has established a dedicated email and phone number for reporting issues related to network investments.
The regulatory body assured the public of swift responses to any complaints received.
