In a disturbing incident, an 80-year-old man, simply identified as Pa Stephen, has been arrested by the Bayelsa State Police Command for allegedly defiling a 10-year-old girl in Otuokpoti community, Ogbia Local Government Area.
According to reports, the suspect said to be a serial paedophile, was apprehended following a tip-off from concerned individuals in the community.
The victim’s foster mother noticed unusual behavior and illness in the girl, leading to the discovery of the alleged abuse.
Gender advocacy groups, including Dise Ogbise Foundation, Reigneth Foundation, Starrz Safety Initiative, and Collins Cocodia Foundation, are involved in the case and have condemned the alleged act.
The suspect, who is said to be suffering from advanced pile and hernia, has been taken to the state police headquarters in Yenagoa for further investigation.
This arrest comes as a welcome development in the fight against child abuse and sexual violence in the state.
The police have promised to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure justice is served.
