Following the Gwoza bombings tragedy, the Army’s 7 Division hosted an awareness seminar for Borno residents and stakeholders to proactively address the threat of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

Flagging off the awareness campaign at Maimalari cantonment in Maiduguri, Acting General Officer Commanding, Brig.-Gen. Abubakar Haruna, explained the importance of awareness in preventing IED-related damages and casualties.

He noted that the populace must be educated on identifying and removing IEDs, as well as reporting suspicious items to the relevant authorities.

According to him, the seminar aimed to create awareness among the population, enabling them to identify and protect others from IED dangers. It also sought to promote collaboration with agencies responsible for safely recovering and disposing of IEDs.

Brig.-Gen. Haruna stressed that the terrorist’s capacity to confront has been degraded, and they now employ IEDs to achieve their goals. He urged the public to report any suspicious items, emphasizing the importance of individual contributions to combating the IED menace.

The seminar facilitators were available to assist and address any doubts or questions from participants. The event underscored the significance of collective efforts in achieving security and stability in the North East region.

“It is important that the populace is made aware of what these things are, how they are, and how they will be able to ensure they are removed from their site.

“The number of damage or kill or wounded will be high… the damage due to lives and properties is tremendous. The fact that the terrorists have been badly damaged, they don’t have the capacity to come confrontation, they now employ this device.

“Please when you see anything you don’t understand, report even if it is from the village, get across to the agencies responsible,” he said.
