THE Federal Government has been charged to take practical steps towards enhancing the security of the country.

The bishop of the Diocese and the president of the Synod, Right Reverend Joseph Olusola disclosed this at the third session of the fifth Synod of Ijesa North-East Diocese with the theme, “Disciple Making”.

According to him, he said the current state of security in Nigeria is a matter of grave concern, not only for physical well-being but also for our spiritual and moral integrity as a nation.

He said the church needs to play an active role in educating their congregations about the importance of vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement agencies.

“The war on insurgency in Nigeria is a battle not only for the physical security of Nigeria but also for its moral and spiritual soul.

“The fight against insurgency requires not just spiritual fortitude but also a concerted effort to address the underlying issues that fuel this conflict. The church has a crucial role to play in fostering reconciliation, promoting education, and advocating for social justice.

“We must work tirelessly to break the chains of oppression and injustice that insurgents exploit. Let us stand united in faith and action, combining our prayers with tangible efforts to build a just, peaceful, and resilient society where the seeds of insurgency cannot take root,” he added.

Speaking on state of the economy of the country, the cleric said the state of the Nigerian economy presents significant challenges that demand urgent and comprehensive responses.

Olusola noted that as a nation blessed with abundant natural and human resources, it is disheartening to witness widespread poverty, unemployment, and inflation.

He encouraged our leaders to implement strategies that stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and ensure a fair distribution of resources, thereby fostering a more just and prosperous society.

“The ruling class must recognise our shared humanity and the need for economic policies that promote fairness and uplift the disadvantaged.

“In light of the pressing economic challenges facing our nation, the need to review the exorbitant salaries and allowances of politicians in Nigeria has never been more urgent.

“The disparity between the lavish compensation of our political leaders and the economic conditions of the average Nigerian is both unsustainable and morally indefensible,” said.
