The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Abeokuta Branch, has called on the Federal Ministry of Environment to intensify support in addressing the recurring flood and environmental challenges plaguing Ogun State.
This appeal was made by the Chairman of the NSE, Abeokuta Branch, Engr Olumayowa Idowu, during a courtesy visit to the Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Isiaq Salako, at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
Engr. Idowu outlined the persistent efforts of the NSE in pursuit of engineering excellence and social responsibility.
He highlighted the Society’s comprehensive flood assessment conducted in the Abeokuta metropolis, which identified 33 critical locations vulnerable to flooding.
Also, he gave a report on a detailed analysis of structural distress in key infrastructures in Ilaro, Ogun West, including the Odo Fufu culvert, Rita culvert, and Gbogidi area.
He said the findings in Ilaro infrastructure revealed alarming erosion at the foundation levels, indicating an imminent risk of collapse, which could severely disrupt transportation and adversely affect the local population.
Engr. Idowu further emphasised the need for a holistic assessment of all critical infrastructures in Ogun State that are nearing collapse, just as he urged the Federal Ministry of Environment to support the full implementation of the NSE’s assessment report, which had been submitted to the Ogun State Government.
The chairman expressed the necessity of immediate action to prevent further devastation and protect the lives and properties of Ogun State residents.
In response, Dr. Salako acknowledged the NSE’s efforts and shared ongoing plans of the Federal Government to address the identified issues, particularly in flood-prone areas of Ogun State.
He assured the NSE of the ministry’s commitment to collaborating with the state government to achieve a permanent solution to the flooding problem.
The minister encouraged the NSE Abeokuta Branch to continue its advocacy and engagement with the state government, stressing the importance of educating the public on the dangers of misusing drainages and culverts as dumping sites.
He also highlighted the environmental benefits of tree planting as a preventive measure against flooding.
