The Ondo State House of Assembly has passed a vote of confidence in the Ondo State Security Network Agency, Amotekun, calling for the funding of the security outfit to be more effective.

The lawmaker representing Okitipupa constituency II in the state assembly, Hon. Ololade Gbegudu, who moved the motion for the vote of confidence, urged the state government to set up the Security Trust Fund to tackle insecurity in the state.

Gbegudu, who described the initiative launched by the South West governors on January 9, 2020, as a timely step in the right direction considering the security challenges in the country, said the initiative must not be allowed to die.

While calling for more collaboration with other security agencies in the state, the lawmaker enjoined the Nigeria Army, Nigeria Police Force, NSCDC, and other security agencies to collaborate with the Corps and intensify efforts by re-introducing the joint patrol of all security agencies to ensure a peaceful atmosphere in the state.

He urged the state governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, to, as a matter of urgency, set up a Board for Security Trust Fund and enforce necessary deductions as stated in the law.

Other lawmakers, however, supported the state security agency in addressing security concerns in the state, assuring the Amotekun Corps of their support.

He said, “The good people of Ondo State have immense trust in you and will continue to support your activities, provided they are done within the ambits of the law that created the agency.”

The lawmakers, however, condemned the recent attacks by suspected herdsmen and men of the underworld, which resulted in the deaths of two farmers in Uba Akoko in the Akoko Southwest local government area of the state, and sympathised with the families of the deceased.

“While appreciating the Governor for his earnest efforts in combating crimes and all forms of insecurity in our dear state, especially the recent distribution of 25 Hilux vehicles to all security agencies operating in the states, we called for increased empowerment of the corps and other sister security agencies operating in the state.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji commended members of the House Committee on Security for their support and assured that adequate support will be provided for Amotekun and other sister security agencies operating in the state.
