The National Coordinator of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project, Mr Sanusi Abubakar, has confirmed their commitment to upgrade the Zamfara state poultry production unit to the standard in the state.

Speaking with Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday, the National Coordinator (NPC) L Press, Mr Sanusi Abubakar
explained why they embarked on a three-day visit to Zamfara state, saying they were on a technical mission to assess the level of project implementation in the state.

“We are in Gusau Zamfara State on a three-day technical mission from August 20th to August 23rd, 2024, to assess the level of project implementation and assessment of the proposed livestock service centre in the state.”

According to him, already Zamfara state was identified among the five benefiting States currently in the first phase of the project implementation in the country.

He said while in the state, among the places visited included the poultry production unit, abattoir, veterinary clinic, and the proposed livestock service centre at Kotorkoshi in the state.

While at the veterinary clinic, the coordinator disclosed that the clinic will be upgraded to a hospital equipped with standard facilities in addition to training and retraining of the personnel for effective service delivery.

Also, at the poultry production unit, he confirmed the project commitment to upgrade the facility, which includes the entire housing systems, feed mill, and hatchery unit, in addition to equally providing a workable and sustainable management approach, especially forming clusters of poultry farmers so as to drive total benefit for livestock farmers in the state.

While at Kotorkoshi, the site allocated for the establishment of the livestock service centre by the state government was also visited and assessed by the team.

“The NPC outlined several benefits of the establishment of the centre, as it will accelerate the momentum of smallholder commercialisation and private sector investment in the livestock value chain while scaling up climate-smart livestock production systems. The Centre will also reduce open grazing and attract private investment in the livestock sector, among others.”.

At Gusau Abattoir, Mr Sanusi Abubakar hinted that the facility will be remodelled up to standard with particular attention to the cold room and the administrative block, and, importantly, an integrated waste management system capable of generating biogas will be constructed.

“The Mission lead equally proposed drilling of an industrial borehole to address the acute water shortage for the facility at Gusau abattoir.”

The visiting team led by the National Coordinator, Mr Sanusi Abubakar, comprised an animal health specialist, an animal husbandry officer, and a technical operations officer who were received and conducted round by the State Project Coordinator, Nasiru Mohammed, and his management team in the state.
