The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has expressed deep disappointment over the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors’ (NARD) decision to commence a seven-day warning strike. This action comes despite ongoing negotiations and multiple pleas from the Federal Government aimed at addressing the doctors’ concerns and maintaining industrial harmony.
In a statement issued on Thursday by Assistant Director Ado Bako, the Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare and working conditions of healthcare workers, including resident doctors. The statement highlighted the government’s recent efforts and progress in addressing many of NARD’s concerns.
The Ministry noted: “Significant strides have been made in recent negotiations, and the government has shown good faith by addressing many of the issues raised by NARD.”
The statement also emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts in collaboration with security agencies, including the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), to ensure the immediate and safe rescue of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola. “High-level discussions and coordinated efforts are currently underway, and we remain confident that these measures will lead to a positive outcome,” it added.

The Ministry regretted NARD’s decision to strike while discussions were still ongoing, stating: “We believe that continued dialogue is the best approach to resolving any outstanding issues.”
The Ministry also announced that, in accordance with labor laws, the Federal Government will implement the “No Work, No Pay” policy for the days the strike is observed. “This measure is not intended to undermine the legitimate concerns of our medical professionals but to ensure that essential healthcare services are not unduly disrupted to the detriment of the public.”
The Ministry urged all resident doctors to return to the negotiation table to collaboratively find lasting solutions to the challenges facing the healthcare sector. “The Ministry remains open to constructive dialogue and is committed to working with all stakeholders to achieve a fair and sustainable resolution.”
