The Labour Party’s governorship candidate in the November 11, 2023, Imo Governorship Election, Senator Athan Achonu, has accepted the Supreme Court’s verdict upholding Governor Hope Uzodinma’s victory.

Achonu made this known on Tuesday while addressing journalists at his country home in Umunumo, Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State.

The Supreme Court had on August 23, 2024, upheld the elections of Uzodinma, alongside those of his Bayelsa and Kogi counterparts, Douye Diri and Usman Ododo, respectively.

Achonu commended the judiciary for entertaining his suit, which challenged the Imo governorship election results from the Tribunal to the Appeal Court, and finally, the Supreme Court.

However, he expressed concern over what he described as an “unhealthy political culture where the judiciary’s pronouncements outweigh the people’s votes.”

Achonu called for a shift in this dynamic, advocating for amendments to the electoral law.

“I respect the judiciary as the final arbiter in our electoral system, but I must express my deep concerns—borne not out of bitterness but out of a steadfast commitment to the principles of justice and fairness that our democracy should uphold,” he said.

He assured the people that the Labour Party, as the opposition, would be guided by decency, decorum, and constructive criticism—encouraging the government when it performs well and holding it accountable when it falls short.

Achonu expressed his deepest gratitude for the unwavering support and belief in their vision for a more prosperous state, reaffirming that their resolve to serve and champion the people’s interests remains unbroken.

He called for support for democratically elected leaders, urging the masses to avoid actions that could tarnish the image of the state or country.

He also advised politicians, the judiciary, and all stakeholders in the electoral process to always consider the far-reaching implications of their decisions, actions, and inactions, particularly on future generations.

Though this judicial decision may be disheartening, Achonu pledged to continue striving for a just, fair, and truly democratic Nigeria.
