A report from the World Giving Index (2023), compiled by the Charities Aid Foundation, has revealed the top African countries with the highest percentage of generous people.
According to the report made available by TRT Afrika, a subsidiary of the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT), the study surveyed multiple countries, evaluating the level of generosity through three key factors: helping strangers, donating money, and volunteering.
The findings show that despite economic challenges, people across Africa strongly commit to giving and supporting their communities.
In this article, Tribune Online examines the top 10 African countries with the most generous people.
1. Kenya
Kenya tops the list, with 76% of adults helping strangers, 53% donating money, and 51% volunteering their time. The East African nation shows a strong balance across all three indicators, reflecting a deeply ingrained culture of kindness and community support.
2. Liberia
Liberia ranks second with a remarkable 80% of adults helping strangers, the highest in the survey. While financial donations stand at a lower 30%, Liberia’s volunteering rate of 65% highlights the country’s strong sense of community involvement.
3. Nigeria
Nigeria follows closely, with 79% of adults helping strangers, 41% donating money, and 37% volunteering. The country’s high percentage of people aiding strangers suggests a deep-rooted culture of empathy.
4. Gambia
In Gambia, 69% of adults are involved in helping strangers, while 54% donate money. Though volunteering figures stand lower at 33%, Gambians maintain a strong presence in offering both financial and physical assistance to those in need.
5. Ethiopia
Ethiopia ranks fifth, with 62% of adults helping strangers and 54% donating money. With 33% of the population volunteering, Ethiopia demonstrates a balanced contribution across the key indicators of generosity, particularly in financial giving.
6. Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone, ranked sixth, sees 76% of adults helping strangers, but only 26% making financial donations. However, with 42% of the population volunteering, the country still stands out for its strong community spirit.
7. Chad
Chad comes in seventh, with 68% of adults helping strangers, 36% donating money, and 38% volunteering. These figures showcase Chad’s steady involvement in both financial and non-financial forms of giving.
8. Guinea
In Guinea, 68% of the population helps strangers, while 33% donate money and 38% volunteer. Although financial contributions are lower, the country still reflects significant acts of service to others.
9. Uganda
Uganda ranks ninth, with 70% of adults helping strangers and 32% donating money. Additionally, 36% of Ugandans volunteer their time, reflecting a strong culture of community support despite lower financial donations.
10. Ghana
Ghana rounds out the list, with 67% of its population helping strangers, 67% donating money, and 34% volunteering. Ghana’s financial generosity is a testament to the nation’s commitment to supporting charitable causes.
