IN commemorating the month of Basic Education and Literacy Project (BELP), Rotary Club of Ibadan Gold has provided school uniforms and textbooks to some secondary school students in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The beneficiaries are students of Our Lady of Apostles, Mary Way, Odo-Ona.

About 80 students were given free school uniforms, while the organisation donated textbooks to the school’s library.

The outreach which was tagged ‘Cloth a child and secure the future”, featured motivational talk, question and answer session, gift presentation and project execution.

The club’s president, Oyewole Fashina, explained the reason for the outreach, saying “the month of September is tagged ‘Basic education and literacy’.

“Like we all know that providing education to a child is a crucial step in securing the future, we discovered that many indigent students are just managing their uniforms, which many having used theirs for several years. This compelled my club members and I to come together and produce 80 pairs of uniform and also procure textbooks of various subjects from SS1 to SS3, Biology, English, Chemistry, Physics, Geography and Economics, which were distributed to mark the month.”

In addition, the president advised students and parents not to relent, saying, “We encourage the students to study hard to attain great heights in the nearest future and also motivate the parents so they won’t relent in catering for their academic needs despite the economic hardship.”

The Project Committee Chairperson, Mrs Ajagbe Oluwaremilekun encouraged the students to give in their best so as to come out in flying colours.

She said the significance of the programme is to give back to the society and cater for the needs of others.

“We already came here to do survey of need and discovered most of the students need uniforms and it is giving them reasons not to attend school regularly.

“This prompted us to donate 80 pieces of the uniform and textbooks for the library and we hope we are able to donate more when next we come,” Oluwaremilekun explained.

In her remarks, the school principal, Mrs Oyeronke Osigwe, expressed gratitude to the club members for the gesture.

Osigwe further explained that the new uniforms and textbooks will encourage and motivate the students to perform better in their academics.

“The new uniforms and textbooks donated will go a long way in helping their learning process.

“I want others to emulate this gesture in assisting schools because the government cannot do it alone,” she said.
