A devastating fire recently swept through the popular Kantin Kwari textile market in Kano, Nigeria, claiming multiple shops.

The incident, TRIBUNE ONLINE gathered, occurred at 7 pm on Gidan Inuwa Mai Mai Bayajidda Street, affecting buildings in the market’s center. Thankfully, swift action from the federal fire service, Kano state fire service, private companies, and reinforcements from nearby markets – Sabon Gari, Dawanau, and Singa – helped quench the flames.

Chairman of the Kantin Kwari Traders Market Association, Ambassador Balarabe Tatari, attributed the fire’s escalation to overcrowding and inadequate access roads.

He emphasised the urgent need for the state government to clear obstructing structures and improve market infrastructure.

This isn’t the first fire incident in Kano markets. Earlier this year, fires ravaged shops in Zawaciki area, Kumbotso Local Government, and Yan Katako Market in Rijiyar Lemu area, Fagge Local Government. In both cases, the Kano State Fire Service responded promptly, but overcrowding and poor access hindered their efforts.
