Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi on Tuesday announced that the death toll from the recent petrol tanker explosion in the state has risen to 181.

Additionally, he reported that around 80 individuals remain hospitalized, with approximately 210 families affected by the tragic incident.

Governor Namadi made the remarks during a press briefing at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he came to update President Bola Tinubu on the disaster.

Although the President was on vacation when the tragedy occurred, Namadi commended his swift response, including sending a delegation to the state immediately after the incident.

“I came to see Mr. President to welcome him back from his annual leave and to brief him on the tragic incident that occurred in Jigawa,” Namadi said.

He expressed gratitude for the President’s prompt action and emphasized the importance of keeping him informed about the government’s efforts in the aftermath of the explosion.

As of the latest update, Governor Namadi detailed the situation, stating, “We have about 181 people that died, 80 in the hospital, and around 210 families affected.”

He highlighted that the state government is covering the medical expenses for all those affected and has implemented various interventions to support the families in need.

Regarding preventive measures, Namadi revealed that a high-powered committee has been established, chaired by a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, to investigate the root causes of the accident.

This committee is tasked with advising the government on necessary actions to prevent future occurrences.

“Mr. President has also directed the Corps Marshal to investigate the matter and propose permanent solutions to such incidents in the country,” he added.

The findings of the investigative panel will ultimately determine if any prosecutions will take place.

Governor Namadi reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the victims and their families during this difficult time.
