The Nigerian House of Representatives has passed a bill for a second reading to establish the Federal College of Fisheries and Aquaculture in Oluponna, Ayedire Local Government Area of Osun State.
The bill was presented by its sponsor, Hon. Mudashiru Lukman, who represents the Ayedire/Iwo/Ola-Oluwa Federal Constituency, during the plenary session on Thursday, October 24, 2024.
This follows the bill’s first reading on November 7, 2023.
According to Hon. Lukman, the bill aims to enhance the development of the fisheries and aquatic sectors in Nigeria, thereby improving food security, fostering economic growth, and ensuring sustainable management of aquatic resources.
He highlighted that Nigeria is rich in aquatic resources and has significant potential for developing fisheries and aquatic science. However, the country faces various challenges in this sector.
The proposed Federal College will offer full-time courses focused on teaching, instruction, and training in fishery technology, aquaculture, applied sciences, commerce, arts, social sciences, humanities, and management.
