Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University College of Medicine (COOUCOM) recently inducted seventy medical doctors who successfully completed their training at the university.

The ceremony took place on Tuesday at the Histopathology Auditorium of the university.

During the induction, the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, urged the new doctors to uphold professionalism in their practice, both in Nigeria and abroad. She also advised them to treat every patient with care and seriousness, emphasizing that the medical profession is for those truly called to serve, not for everyone.

Prof. Omenugha expressed confidence in the quality of medical doctors produced by the institution, highlighting the state-of-the-art equipment and qualified staff at the university.

She thanked the state governor, Chukwuma Charles Soludo, who was represented at the ceremony by his deputy, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, as well as the Provost of the College, Prof. Laurence Ikeako, and the parents of the new doctors, for their various contributions to the success of the event.

The Chief Medical Director of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Joe Akabuike, noted that the institution was able to produce these doctors despite the economic challenges facing the country.

In his address, the college’s Provost, Prof. Ikeako, expressed pride in the quality of medical doctors the institution is releasing to the public. He affirmed that the college’s standards are comparable to those anywhere in the world.

“I am happy to announce today that we are celebrating the dedication, resilience, and accomplishments of our newest group of medical doctors, who are fully prepared to make a positive impact in the field of healthcare,” he said.

“This moment represents the culmination of years of hard work, study, and a commitment to excellence. Your journey through this citadel of learning has prepared you to face the challenges of the profession with courage, skill, and compassion.

“As the Provost of this esteemed College, I am immensely proud of each and every one of you. For me, this is also a unique moment, as it is my first official assignment since being elected by my distinguished colleagues just three months ago.”

Prof. Ikeako also used the occasion to announce that the college will undergo National Universities Commission (NUC) accreditation in a month.

He encouraged the newly inducted doctors to be patient in their practice, reminding them that the essence of medicine is to save lives, not to amass wealth quickly.
