President Bola Tinubu extended heartfelt congratulations to Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, veteran journalist and former Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), on his 80th birthday, celebrated on November 9, 2024.
In a statement issued Friday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy), Tinubu highlighted Ugochukwu’s illustrious career, which spans pivotal moments in Nigeria’s history and serves as an inspiration for younger generations.
The statement noted Ugochukwu’s early journey, including his service in the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970) on the Biafran side, motivated by strong convictions. After the war, he resumed his university studies and graduated with distinction.
His professional path began in 1973 as an economic research assistant at the Central Bank of Nigeria. In 1975, he pivoted to journalism at the Daily Times of Nigeria, where he pioneered business journalism, ultimately serving as Business Editor, Daily Editor, and Executive Director.

As Special Adviser to former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the founding Chairman of the NDDC, Ugochukwu’s dedication to public service was unwavering. He even contested for the governorship of Abia State, showcasing his commitment to his country.
Today, Ugochukwu is celebrated as an elder statesman and a recipient of the national honor, Commander of the Order of the Niger. His life exemplifies resilience, diligence, altruism, and humility.
President Tinubu rejoiced with Ugochukwu as he joined the ranks of Nigeria’s esteemed octogenarians, praying for his continued health and longevity and hoping that his wisdom and insights will benefit the nation for many more years.
