Emir of Zazzau calls for youth leadership programmes in tertiary institutions

The Emir of Zazzau, Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli in Kaduna state has harped on the need for tertiary institutions to introduce youth leadership programmes as part of measures to tackle the issue of leadership deficit confronting our society.

He made this known during a Youth Leaders Clinic programme, organized by Kaduna State Post Graduate Students of the University of Abuja held at Kaduna State University over the weekend.

The first-class monarch also remarked that the most important ingredients of leadership are honesty, integrity, fairness, and courage, saying, “You can never be a good leader if you choose to stay by the edge.

He told the students that a leader must be able to take decisive decisions that are beneficial to the people, stressing that, “nepotism should be set aside. You have to look at competence above tribe and religion.

“We have to be patriotic if we want to stand tall in any part of the world. That is what will earn you respect. You have to be assertive and make courageous decisions even if some people are opposed to you so long as the decision is in the best interest of the generality of the people.

To this end, the Emir noted that, “l think we should be having leadership lectures, programmes in our tertiary institutions so that the youths should be exposed to leadership skills.

Also speaking at the event, the Deputy Governor of Kaduna state, Hadiza Balarabe, represented by one of her Special Advisers, Mallam Rilwan Hassan noted that true leader carries out his or her responsibilities diligently and as a role model.

According to her, “Leadership at any level comes with responsibility, whether you are a class monitor or a Head boy or Head girl in your school.

She remarked that effective leadership requires carrying everybody along regardless of tribe or religion by ensuring that everyone is treated fairly.

In his remarks, the Director Abuja Leadership Centre, University of Abuja, Prof. Philip Afaha, represented by Prof. Joseph Golwa, remarked that the programme is one of the interventions of TETfund to address the problem of leadership deficits in human societies.

The issue of leadership deficit is a problem all over the world. Identifying this and having institution meant to focus on building leadership people.

“What our postgraduate students are doing today is to train the young ones on leadership skills.
