Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has suspended his Senior Special Assistant on Print Media, Mr. Wale Ajetunmobi, over a controversial tweet claiming that #EndSARS arsonists were “hunted and executed.”
The announcement was made on Tuesday via the Lagos State Government’s official X (formerly Twitter) page.
Ajetunmobi’s suspension is on the heels of a tweet he posted on Sunday, November 24, 2024.
Tweeting under the pseudonym #Riddwane, Sanwo-Olu’s aide claimed that those who perpetrated the burning the Television Continental (TVC) station in Lagos during the 2020 #EndSARS protests had been “hunted down and executed.”
In the tweet, Ajetunmobi specifically alleged that one of the executed individuals was a young boy, whose name he withheld, known to trade in cooking gas around the Ketu area. He further claimed that the boy was found with an AK-47 rifle at the site of the arson.
The tweet reads, “The full story of people who burnt down TVC in 2020 will be told one day, with gory clips and images. One thing to note: the majority of them have been hunted down and executed.
“One of them, a young boy trading in cooking gas around Ketu, was found with an AK-47 at the site. Even his neighbours were shocked. But the full gist is better saved for later.”
But reacting to the claims, the Lagos State Government described Ajetunmobi’s comments as a “misrepresentation of facts” and announced his suspension as a consequence.
A statement from the government reads, “Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has suspended his Senior Special Assistant on Print Media, Mr. Wale Ajetunmobi.
“Mr Ajetunmobi’s suspension comes on the heels of the misrepresentation of facts on his personal ‘X’ account regarding a past incident.
“The Governor wishes to state categorically that his administration frowns at any form of extrajudicial punishment and will not be a part of any such action. That is not who we are. That is not our way.”
